S5E29: How can your New Language Self feel more whole?
Full transcript:
Good morning, happy Thursday and welcome to the LCP, the daily dose of language courage for people who love languages, and those who really don’t, but have to learn one anyway. All this week on the podcast in preparation for the Cosy and Compassionate Productivity for Language Learners workshop next Monday, we are looking at how we want to spend the last three months of this year, how we’d like to spend our time and our energy, and whether we want to speed up or wind down, and if you would love to join us, all the details are coming at the end of this episode. And today, it is going be a super quick episode to ask you, as we start to get into warm and cosy mode, what’s one thing you could do today that would make you feel a little bit more whole in your new language?
And it could be anything, it doesn’t need to cost anything, it doesn’t need to take a long time, but just something that makes you feel like you, in your new language? That brings in your life experiences, your core identity, your expertise, whatever it is that feels like it exists so deeply in your native language self, but that you feel your new language can’t really support at the moment?
Because one of the things I’ve noticed is that there is nothing warmer and cosier than feeling like you’re bringing your language back to yourself, you know? And that might mean helping your language to really express a part of who you are. It might also be letting your new language bring you comfort in some way, through sitcoms, or podcasts between really close friends or films that just feel like home. It might be also about exploring the familiar in your language, maybe finding translations of your favourite childhood books and films or listening to Disney songs in translation or whatever it might be that can pair that nostalgia with the novelty of your new language.
And if you want to really explore how you work best in the autumn and winter seasons, reflect on how things are going so far and set your goals or themes for the rest of the year, I’d love to invite you to join me for my Cosy and Compassionate Productivity for Language Learners journaling workshop next Monday 16th October. It’s going to be a super relaxed and cosy way to look at how we’d like to round off the year and get some encouragement from likeminded creative, introspective and mission driven along the way. It's happening next Monday, on Zoom, 7-8:30pm UK time next Monday, tickets are £8 or just under $10, and if you would love to come but you can’t make it live, there will be a replay available too. For more information or book your place, head to the shownotes for this episode, OR my website www.languageconfidenceproject.com, or in the link in my IG bio at @teawithemily. Bring a notebook and your favourite pens, bring a beverage, and let’s make the end of this year magical.
